Is Sunscreen Causing Cancer?
This is a question that is being asked by many people and much information has been bandied about on the internet.
Does sunscreen really help stop or does it contribute to the rise in skin cancer? I wondered about it myself and having had problems with skin cancer in the past I did some research.
Here's what I found out.
Some researchers at the Environmental Working Group, which is a Washington-based nonprofit, released findings that most of the popular sunscreens on the market today may "actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop." The reason is that they contain cancer-causing chemicals such as octocrylene, octinoxate or oxybenzone. Many brands are also using a synthetic form of vitamin A and its derivatives retinol and retinyl palmitate.
(The operative word here is synthetic. We're not talking about the natural vitamin A that's in our food and is a requirement for good health.)
These substances react negatively to sunlight and become toxic in our system producing free radicals and gene mutations that speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.
Well that didn't sound like good news. I didn't get the "warm fuzzies" reading that information!
Oh, and it gets worse.
I found out that the FDA had supervised and FUNDED studies which showed that the key ingredients related to the synthetic vitamin A in sunscreen were carcinogenic. They knowingly prevented this information from being released to the public.
However, they recently had to publish their findings. Why? because you and I can now find it on the internet if we do the research ourselves like I did.
Let me tell you my story.
About ten years ago I was totally stunned when I was told that what looked like a small freckle on the back of my arm was in fact melanoma...the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Immediate surgery was required. Lucky for me it was at an early stage and hadn't penetrated the dermis (lower layer of the skin) and gone into the lymph nodes. So it was safely removed.
A few years later my dermatologist biopsied an area of my face that concerned me. The biopsy revealed a small cancerous tumor near my nose. Surgery was suggested but I resisted remembering the length of scar on my arm resulting from a tiny "freckle".
I decided to see what other options I had.
What really concerned me was why, after dutifully wearing sunscreen every day as my doctor had suggested, did I develop skin cancer in the first place?
Of course that's when I discovered that sunscreen itself was the culprit. So naturally I stopped using it.
I started exposing my bare skin to fifteen minutes in the sun daily to build up my vitamin D supply which had greatly diminished from wearing sunscreen. (The UVB rays of the sun on your body produce vitamin D which helps prevent cancer). This is something that the sunscreen companies fail to let us know.
I began looking at labels on cosmetics and other skin care products and looking up the ingredients on www.safecosmetics.com. I found chemicals in all of them. I searched for the purest products I could find and started using them, These are the products that you'll find on my website; www.farrensnaturalcosmetics.
I also found a very effective natural sunscreen that I sell on my site.
As it turned out another biopsy revealed that the tumor was now benign and I didn't need the surgery after all. My dermatologist was amazed.
So the lesson here for all of us is to become "savvy shoppers" and learn about the ingredients in products that we apply to our skin. After all our skin is our largest organ and passes substances directly into our blood stream.
I'm reminded of the story of the frog in the frying pan. You can put a live frog into a cold frying pan and he won't jump out. Then you can slowly turn up the heat until he's "cooked" and he never would have noticed the difference.
That 's the way these chemicals work in our bodies.
